Muscles of the Shank
Gastronemius
Originates from the distal end of the femur. Inserts on the calcaneous. This muscle extends the ankle and flexes the knee.
Soleus
Originates from the fibula. Inserts on the calcaneous. This muscle extends the ankle (plantar flexion).
Tibialis anterior
Originates from the proximal end of the tibia and fibula. Inserts on the second metatarsal. This muscle flexes the ankle (dorsiflexion).
Extensor digitorum longus
Originates from the anterior lateral condyle of the tibia. Inserts on the dorsal surface. This muscle extends the toes and ankles.
Peroneus tertius
Originates from the distal anterior surface of the fibula. Inserts on the dorsal surface of metatarsal 5. This muscle is responsible for dorsiflexion and eversion of the foot.
Peroneus longus
Originates from the fibula. Inserts on the first metatarsal, and the medial cuneiform. This muscle is responsible for plantarflexion and eversion.
